
USUS is a landscape architecture studio based in Zurich, Switzerland. Their work aims to "find a place between the familiar and the unfamliar" and their new website needed to reflect that. The webdesign, done by <ins>[Pascal Botlik](https://botlik.net/)</ins>, is unconventional, yet intuitive to use. The page is split in two separate sections, which can be switched with a click. The first one shows an ordered list of all projects while the second one features a regularly updated stream of quotes, images or videos, reflecting the nature of USUS' work. Subpages are displayed as Modals, which can be scrolled upwards to dismiss them. A large, yellow button leads to a chatroom for every visitor to share their thoughts in.
Because of the unconventional nature of the design, I needed tools flexible enough to realise all the needed features. I decided to use Next.js as a frontend framework, as its extremely performant and packed with lots of helpful features. As a CMS, I used Sanity.io. It's extremely customisable and features a responsive, React based interface. Additionally, I modified the backend to allow automatic translations of fields using the DeepL API.

USUS Landscape Architecture


The Brodelbruder app is a classic platform game with social media aspects. In the world of BrodelBruder, all the healthy recipes have been stolen from the famous Brodel Guild. As a player, you have the task of finding exactly these recipes.

This works by exploring enemy caves, castles and fortresses in the game to find lists of ingredients there. From these ingredient lists, the player then creates new recipes in real life and uploads them to the tavern to share with other players. Here the recipes can be rated, discussed and celebrated. You meet new people or compare yourself with friends who have also joined the Brodel Guild.

To keep motivation high, you get gold and fame through good recipe ratings and a high level of brodel activity. These can be exchanged for powerful weapons and impenetrable armour in the game. This way you are always armed for the fight against the sickly brood.

I decided to use Unity to bring the game to life, as it makes working with pixel-art and tilemaps very accessible.

**[The Midnight](https://www.themidnightofficial.com/)** is a musical duo from Los Angeles, California. It consists of Tyler Lyle, a songwriter from the deep south of the USA, and Tim McEwan, a producer from Denmark. Together they have been producing music in the genre of synthwave since 2012, which builds on elements of 80s film and video game soundtracks. The Midnight combines these sounds with elements from other genres of electronic dance music, such as house, and finishes their sound with powerful drums and characteristic saxophone solos.

The impact intent of this special edition concept is the creation of nostalgic feelings in the customer. The artists' music is already a rich source for this, but it only evokes the desired feeling as soon as it is listened to. However, the nostalgic feeling should already be awakened at the point of sale, i.e. before the customer has even come into direct contact with the songs of The Midnight. Thus, another source of nostalgia is needed.
Synthwave as a genre works with various stylistic devices and sounds of the video games of the 80s. At the same time the old, pixelated 8-bit games are for many of us an important part of our childhood. Numerous hours were spent secretly under the covers in the dead of night cracking high scores and collecting Pokemons. Through emulators, many of these games can still be played today, making them perfect for grabbing customers by their childhood memories.

Each box comes with a small handheld gaming console that customers can have personalized at the point of sale with their favorite games from the past. The console itself is anything but old-fashioned: it can be charged with an ordinary cell phone charger and fits in any jacket pocket. In addition, the device also contains a digital version of the individual music carriers, so that nothing stands in the way of enjoying music on the go.

Overall, a modern design style should nevertheless not be ignored in order to stand up to the competition. So while the core of the concept is pure "Eighties Vibes", the shell forms a futuristic, contrasting design. Among other things, this is reflected in the box, which is kept in a plain black. Only the embedded logo on the lid breaks the otherwise smooth surface.
Inside the box, the design remains reduced. Only when opening the ring-bound booklet the custom, neon yellow "Ayana" font shines at us and forms a strong contrast to the rest of the design. Just as melancholy and euphoria are juxtaposed in the bands motto "Mono no aware", the design juxtaposes dark colors with iridescent glow, dynamic display fonts with blocky pixel fonts.

The Midnight - Special Edition forms an ambivalent overall appearance, in keeping with the retrofuturism of the music.

An Exploration of Rain: We primarily associate rain with unpleasantries. We miss the sunshine and hate getting wet.
In our collective discomfort, we tend to forget the great sides of rain; why we need it and how it can help us in our daily lives.
With OZONE I tried to break with the negative connotation of rain and show ways to understand and enjoy "bad weather".
For that I wrote and designed a "rain compendium" and developed a small VR application for you to roam around a rainy landscape without getting wet.
